Description
Composition
E-gold® 400 licap: Each licap/liquid in hard gelatin capsule contains Vitamin-E (as dl-a-tocopheryl acetate USP) 400 mg.
Pharmacology
E-gold® licap is a synthetic Vitamin-E preparation. The exact biological function of Vitamin-E is unknown, although Vitamin-E is believed to act as an antioxidant. Vitamin-E protects polyunsaturated fatty acids (which are components of cellular membrane) and other oxygen-sensitive substances such as Vitamin-A and Ascorbic acid (Vitamin-C) from oxidation. In premature neonates’ irritability, edema, thrombosis and hemolytic anemia may be caused due to Vitamin-E deficiency. Creatinuria, ceroid deposition, muscle weakness, decreased erythrocyte survival or increased in vitro hemolysis by oxidizing agents have been identified in adults and children with low serum tocopherol concentrations. Administration of Vitamin-E completely eliminates the sign of Vitamin-E deficiency. 20%-80% of Vitamin-E is absorbed from the GI Tract and it requires the presence of bile salts and dietary fat for efficient absorption, Vitamin-E is metabolized in the liver and excreted primarily in bile. Small amounts are excreted in urine.
Indication
As a dietary supplement and for prophylactic use:
1. To meet raised requirements (e.g. pregnancy and lactation period, high dietary intake of polyunsaturated fatty acid etc).
2. For prevention of vitamin E deficiency due to malabsorption syndromes caused by pancreatic, hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal disorders.
Therapeutic use
1. Haemolytic anaemia due to vitamin E deficiency (in premature infants).
2. Intermittent claudication.
Also vitamin E has been found to be effective in preventing and alleviating the symptoms of the following conditions:
1. In internal medicine: Thromboangiitis obliterans, Varicose ulcers, Myocardial insufficiency, Fibrositis, Dupuytren’s contracture, Peyronie’s disease, male infertility, Dyslipoproteinaemia with low HDL cholesterol and high LDL cholesterol.
2. In gynaecology and obstetrics:Habitual abortion, tendency to premature delivery, habitual stillbirth, threatened abortion, menopausal disorders, pruritus vulvae, kraurosis vulvae.
3. In dermatology: Lupus erythematosus, granuloma annulare, acrodermatosis, atrophicans progressiva, scleroderma.
Dosage & Administration
Dosage varies according to individual’s need. The following dosages are recommended in different indications.
1. Betterment of Cardiovascular health: 400 mg – 800 mg/day
2. Deficiency syndrome in adults: 200 mg – 400 mg/day
3. Deficiency syndrome in children: 200 mg/day
4. Thalassemia: 800 mg/day
5. Sickle-cell anemia: 400 mg/day
6. Betterment of Skin & Hair: 200 mg – 400 mg/day (Topical use is also established for beautification)
7. Chronic cold in adults: 200 mg/day
Other indications and dosages are the followings:
1. Thromboangiitis obliterans, varicose ulcers, myocardial insufficiency: 300-600 mg daily.
2. Fibrositis, Dupuytren’s contracture, Peyronie’s disease, dyslipoproteinaemia with low HDL cholesterol and high LDL cholesterol: 200-300 mg daily.
3. Male infertility: 100-200 mg daily.
4. Habitual abortion, tendency to premature delivery, habitual stillbirth: 100 mg daily from the beginning of pregnancy as a prophylaxis, with hormone therapy if required.
5.Threatened abortion: 100 mg every 6 hours until the crisis is over.
6. Menopausal disorders, pruritus vulvae, kraurosis vulvae: 100-200 mg daily.
7. Lupus erythematosus, granuloma annulare, acrodermatosis, dermatitis atrophicans diffuse progressiva, scleroderma: 100-300 mg daily.
Contraindication and Precaution
No absolute contraindication.
Side Effect
Overdoses (>1g) have been associated with minor side effects, including hypertension, fatigue, diarrhoea and myopathy.
Drug Interaction
Vitamin-E impairs the absorption of Vitamin-A and Vitamin-K. Vitamin-E inhibits the function of Vitamin-K at the level of prothrombin formation and potentiates the effect of Warfarin.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Vitamin E is safe in pregnancy and lactation, when used as recommended doses. Higher doses are not established.
Use in Children
Vitamin-E is safe for children.
Storage Requirement
Should be stored at a temperature not exceeding 30º C, protected from light.
